SATURDAY / SEPTEMBER 9 / 2017

As the downtown (not so) gradually gentrifies, I find myself frequently struck by the juxtaposition of stark contrasts in aesthetic that comes along with such eerie and inevitable developments. In a perverse parody of what is generally considered pleasing to the eye and calming to the spirit, the vibrancy wrought from decades worth of unmitigated growth and cultural sprawl clashes head on with frantic efforts to "build up" and streamline, leaving a tangled mess of shuttered landmarks and brutalist living space. Fortunately, flourishing in scattered pockets like so much giant hogweed, some have mastered methods to infuse chaos with a less imposing sense of structure, nurturing the ugly charm of the creative spark rather than stifling it. Over the course of this sundry Saturday evening, residents of three cities well acquainted with this process will meet under cover of smog and potentially contextualize this rambling effort to encapsulate their greatness in a paragraph or less.
